Is Content Becoming
Increasingly Generic?

When you walk through a city today, it can quickly feel as though everything is starting to look the same. Whereas individuality, bold colors, and personal expression once played a much stronger role in shaping everyday life – much like the whimsical, colorful world of Pippi Longstocking’s Villa Villekulla – muted tones and minimalist designs now seem to dominate. Grey cars on the road, minimalist interior trends, and the so-called “sad beige” aesthetic are just a few examples of how certain styles spread and shape our surroundings.

The same trend is visible on social media. Whether you open LinkedIn, Instagram or Facebook, many posts can feel remarkably similar. It’s not just the same songs, trends and video concepts appearing in an endless loop. The same goes for copy and imagery. Even when posts cover different topics, familiar layouts and repeated phrases can make social media feel increasingly like one big homogeneous stream of content. But why is that happening in the first place?

Success Has a Pattern

Developing original formats, trends or new video concepts takes time and effort. Before publishing, it’s impossible to know exactly how an audience will respond or how much attention a post will attract. For many creators and businesses, that uncertainty carries a real risk – especially when an account depends on publishing consistently.

To keep posting regularly, many creators turn to formats that have already proven successful, relying on what feels like a safer bet. Algorithms also play a key role. Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn tend to show people content that reflects their interests. The more often users engage with particular types of content, the more likely they are to see similar topics again and again. These so-called filter bubbles can shape what inspires creators, too.

In addition, a growing range of digital tools is making content creation easier, while also changing the way content is produced. Video-editing platforms such as CapCut, for example, offer a wide range of ready-made templates that allow users to add their own footage, text, or images. As a result, complex video formats that once required considerable time and technical expertise can now be created in just a few steps. Canva works in much the same way when it comes to visual design: with a wide range of templates for social media posts, presentations, and graphics, users can quickly create professional-looking designs without having to develop everything from scratch.

Artificial intelligence is also becoming increasingly common in content production. It can be used to generate new ideas, suggest topics, or come up with suitable wording for captions and other written content. For creators and companies in particular, these tools offer a way to consistently produce new content while making production processes more efficient.

At the same time, these tools influence the look and feel of the content itself. When many users rely on the same templates, trends and automated suggestions, familiar structures and visual patterns begin to emerge. What makes content easier to produce can also make posts less distinctive.

How Does Repetitive Content Affect Audiences?

The constant stream of content on social media makes it increasingly difficult for businesses to capture attention. Within minutes of opening an app, users can encounter a large number of posts that look and sound much alike. Content that offers genuine value or feels personal is more likely to stand out. Similar, formulaic posts are often given only a brief glance or skipped altogether.

Useful tips from your area of expertise, compelling examples, personal experiences and behind-the-scenes insights can all give people a reason to stop scrolling. After all, users are unlikely to remember the copied trend they scrolled past. What tends to stick with them are the pieces of content that feel authentic and genuinely offered them something useful.

Why You Should Still Add a Personal Touch

Trends, successful formats and tools that make certain processes easier are now an established part of social media. They can help you create content efficiently and join timely conversations. The key is to use them thoughtfully.

The goal isn’t to recreate every trend as soon as it appears or comment on every current event. It’s to give your audience content and formats that genuinely offer something useful. A mix of timely trends and save-worthy content can strike the right balance – resulting in content that stands out and that audiences actually want to engage with.
